Gen-Myo 玄妙

Thoughtful and consistent details are the essence of Japanese design & craftsmanship, and this became the origin of the building name “GenMyo” (meaning superb skillfulness). Natural Hokkaido cedar extends from inside to outside, and combines with sleek metal edges to create a rich and warm, yet contemporary feel.

As you walk through the linear layout of the 3 three volumes that comprise Gen-Myo, the impressive depth of the site unfolds before you, and each room has panoramic views to Mt. Yotei. The existing contours provided a natural platform, which became the elevated stage for the building. The size of the volumes, alignment and the alternating roof forms created a certain rhythm and emphasized the strong connection to the site. “Bridges” connect you the Entrance wing, the Living/Dining/Kitchen wing and the Bedroom wing, each representing a different area of usage.

The impressive 3,000 sqm site in Kabayama features a natural water spring that burbles out of the ground next to Gen-Myo, meandering through towering silver birch trees. The views to Mt. Yotei are captured from every room. The verdant green mountainside that the house backs onto are framed within the large living room and master bedroom windows, with sneak peaks from high clerestory windows in other bedrooms.

From the large and open LDK to the cozy reading space at the bridge and warm bedrooms with loft spaces, guests can enjoy the site and the feel of nature. The living room features an elegant wood burning fireplace, and vaulted ceilings. An inviting Japanese spa bath is imbued with the unique sweet and spicy scent of Hinoki wood. Relax into the hot water after a day in the mountains, with Mt. Yotei framed in front.

There are 3 fully ensuited bedrooms, each with its own extra loft sleeping space, plus a tatami room, giving Gen-Myo a sleeping capacity of 12, making it ideal for family groups. The chalet also comes with a single car garage and ski room.
