ANDON 行燈

A lantern in the forest was the concept for Andon, and also inspired the name. The metal mesh screen on the second floor is evocative of paper lanterns, though thankfully much more durable, and also provides an additional layer of privacy.

Dramatic cantilevers step outwards from the garage, upwards to the impressive extended eaves. The steel frame gives a feeling of lightness and minimalism, with red accents that give a playful nod to the structure. The protruding terra-cotta blade wall visually anchors the building, and is a solid counter-point to the light steel frame. Massive sheets of steel were folded delicately around the feature staircase in organic curves, and is an impressive marriage of compelling design and superb craftsmanship.

The design optimizes the view lines from an enviable site in Elevation, capturing Mt. Yotei, Mt. Annupuri, Niseko-Hirafu Resort, and also the tranquil forest behind the chalet. High efficiency triple glazed windows ensure comfort while affording expansive views. Accordion style windows fold open around the spa, transforming it from an inside space to an outside rotenburo bathing experience.
